John Armstrong had been deeply impressed by the International Surrealist Exhibition held in London in 1936, and particularly with the work of René Magritte and Salvador Dalí. His own work became increasingly Surrealist in character, but in a restrained and delicate manner. He also designed for the theatre and films, made advertising pictures for Shell during the 1930s and enjoyed decorating interiors. In 1955 he painted the decorative ceiling of Bristol's Council Chamber. It is a fantasy, with Bristol buildings, allegorical figures and a sea dense with sails.
