In 1914, only a year after leaving the Slade School of Fine Art, David Bomberg staged a large one-man show in London which confirmed him as a leading painter of the avant-garde. 'Figure Composition' probably dates from the previous year when he visited Paris and was encouraged by leading artists including Pablo Picasso, André Derain and Amedeo Modigliani. After the First World War, when he fought in the trenches, he abandoned his fragmented, mechanistic style. He turned to landscapes and portraits, painted with energetic brushwork and bursting with colour. The back of the panel is also painted, with a landscape scene.
