The Balkan Wars, over a decade-long period between 1991 and 2001, led to the disintegration of the former Republic of Yugoslavia and ultimately affected all six former Yugoslav republics. Grace was moved by the conflict to paint a series of works entitled Formerly Jugoslavia. The first of the series featured a big flaming cross. Grace recalls: ‘When I was asked “Why the cross? Why not the cross and crescent?” I couldn’t answer until I realised that I was relating the conflict to the American South and the Ku Klux Klan whose symbol was the burning cross.’ The Falmouth painting is the second in the series and was painted in 1994. Like Sir Terry Frost, much of Grace’s work is joyful. But in the Jugoslavia Series she attacks the canvas with vigour.
