A handsome russet-coloured cockerel with a white comb struts towards the right of the picture. Behind him and to the left two hens, one white, one speckled, are nestled at the foot of a tree. Some ivy trails from the tree across the ground to the right. In the background, farm buildings and a gate can be seen. The pink-tinged clouds hanging low in the sky suggest that it is early evening.
