George Cary IV, inherited the Cary estates from his father, George Cary III, in 1805. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Kingskerswell and Ipplepen volunteers.

Shee studied under the American artist Benjamin West. He painted historical subjects and actors, and later members of the Royal Family. Shee became President of the Royal Academy and was knighted in 1830. He continued the traditions of his predecessor, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
