The scene is set at Windsor Castle looking across to St George's Chapel. The king is dressed in the formal robes of the Master of the Order of the Garter. The painting was completed in 1792 and hung in St Mary's Guildhall. It was intended to inspire support for the king at a time of revolution in neighbouring France.
