George Watson was a merchant in Edinburgh and the first accountant of the Bank of Scotland. He endowed a considerable amount of money to the Merchant Company to build and run a hospital for boys which later became George Watson’s College. This work was purchased by the Governors of George Watson’s Hospital from the grandchildren of George Watson’s half-brother for 25gns in 1777 and then passed to the Merchant Company.
