Giacomo Doria, a Genoese merchant resident in Venice from 1529–1541, commissioned this dignified, restrained portrait around 1533–1535. Doria acted as diplomat for the Genoese state and had connections with the Hapsburg court; two of his sons were to become Doge of Genoa. This painting displays Titian's keen psychological sensitivity and his painterly skills in orchestrating a near-monochrome composition. He used possibly for the first time in his portraiture the device of a grand, polished marble column, thereby expanding the picture space and denoting the sitter as a person of wealth and authority.
