In the late 1940s Clough began to focus her attention on the dockside activity she saw at Lowestoft and along the Thames. The paintings that she produced of labourers, factories and cranes established her alongside a group of artists often characterised as Neo-Romantic, including Robert Colquhoun, Keith Vaughan and John Craxton. Prunella Clough won the Jerwood Painting Prize in 1999.
