The working conditions underground clearly had a lasting impact on Phillips and remained with him for much of his life. Like many mining artists, painting offered him an important outlet through which to translate his early memories of those difficult working conditions. Despite the dark nature of much of his work, the camaraderie between the men underground was an issue that Phillips clearly regarded as one of the positive aspects of the industry, and was a theme that later came to dominate his art.
