Compton, born at Compton Wynyates, Warwickshire, educated at Queen's, gave up a military career for the Church. He supervised the education of Princesses Mary and Anne, daughters of James II, his influence being largely responsible for their lifelong devotion to Protestantism. Appointed Bishop of London in 1675. Soon after his accession James quarrelled with him and suspended him from office. He took charge of the coronation of William III and Mary.
