This portrait of King George III (1738–1820) in his coronation robes was painted by Matthew William Peters, who was Grand Portrait Painter at the Grand Lodge of England, one of two governing bodies of Freemasonry in England in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. King George III, however, was not a Freemason. The portrait was badly damaged in a fire at Freemasons’ Hall, London in 1883, and so is greatly restored.
