Branwell Brontë's painting teacher William Robinson probably set Branwell to copy this painting from a sporting print as practice. It clearly demonstrates that Branwell was still learning, since it is crudely painted, and shows that he had not yet mastered the technique of using oils; cracking is clearly visible in the paint. It was bought in 1861 by a Mr Thomas Parker at the sale of Branwell's father Patrick's effects that took place at the Parsonage after Patrick's death. Mr Parker donated it to the Brontë Society in 1894.
