In August 1940 Hitchen’s home and studio was bombed during the Blitz. Hitchens decided to move out of the city with his wife Molly and his newly-born son John to the South Downs. He had recently bought a plot of six acres of woodland at Lavington Common near Petworth and they lived in a gypsy caravan for the next few years, without electricity or running water. Hitchens built a studio, which was enlarged to become the family house, known as ‘Greenleaves.’
