Stuart MacDonald’s work is mainly abstract, combining ideas and images to tell a story through shape and colour. His work brings together familiar maritime symbols and shapes, such as the outline of a ship’s rudder, signal flags and navigational buoys. His works make reference to space and architecture, such as in the views from above of two boats tied to the quay wall in this painting.

MacDonald was Director of The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture, from 1998 to 2006. For the next three years, until retirement, he was Head of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen.
