Like the Impressionists before him, Delaunay was particularly interested in the effects of colour and light. In this portrait of the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, washes of paint have been applied with a free hand, creating vague areas of colour rather than defined outlines. Delaunay was an important member of the Parisian artistic scene in the period pre-1914. In 1918, he and his wife Sonia, also a famous artist, were living in Madrid, where they were commissioned by Diaghilev's influential Ballet Russe to create the set and costumes for Cleopatra. It was there that they met Stravinsky, who was himself closely involved with the Ballet Russe. This is one of two portraits of Stravinsky by the artist, both painted in Madrid in the same year.
