Legros's interest in Spanish art in the 1860s is evident in this painting. The composition is close to a painting exhibited at the Salon of 1863 (private collection, Paris) which Legros modified before sending it to the Royal Academy in London in 1865. Similar compositions of monks and worshippers are common in his paintings and prints of the 1860s.
