Portrait of James Augustus Grant in his role as Convener of the County of Nairn. Nairn Museum is housed in his former home, Viewfield. Born in 1777, Grant had a distinguished career with the East India Company and returned home to Nairn in 1820. He bought Viewfield in 1812, married in 1813 and served for many years as Provost and Commissioner of Supply. He was named Convener of Nairn County in 1847. The Colvin Smith portrait was paid for by local subscription and presented in 1861 to be hung in the Nairn Court House. After more than 100 years it was taken down and stored in the Court House Tower. With the demise of the County and District of Nairn, Highland Council gave Grant’s portrait to the Nairn Museum on a long term loan. The painting has suffered considerable damage over the years from damp and the vicissitudes of storage.
