Not much is known about the sitter, James Fletcher, except that he lived at Skipton, North Yorkshire, a market town not far from Bradford and even closer to Haworth, the home of the Brontës. The style indicates that it was probably painted during the time Branwell had his own studio, at 3 Fountain Street, Bradford.
