This painting depicts a three-quarter length portrait of a man, his back to the viewer; he looks at us over his left shoulder. His left arm is slightly raised, pointing in to the distance. The background to the right is a classical column and red curtain while on the left a vista opens out, revealing a murky and ambiguous landscape (probably the Isle of Man). The man is dressed in black velvet robes and carries a sword by his side. The sitter is James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, a Royalist who was involved in the siege of Bolton in 1645. He then returned to the Isle of Man, a Derby family lordship acquired by the 6th Earl in 1609. Derby family lore states that he is pointing to the island in this composition.
