There is some doubt whether this is a portrait of Bentham. Bentham entered Queen's College as a commoner in 1760 at the age of 12. He gained a BA in 1763; MA in 1766; called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn, 1817; he made very little effort to succeed as a barrister, but turned to physical science and speculations on politics and law.

Geddes was a Scottish artist who later worked in London. Mainly known as a portrait painter, he also produced history painting and landscapes in the Dutch manner.
