Purchased by a member of the Brontë Society because it represented the way she believed the Brontës' Aunt Branwell would have looked, this painting was hung at the Parsonage from 1954 until 1987 and mistakenly labelled as being a portrait of Elizabeth Branwell. In 1986 it appeared on a TV programme and two letters independent of each other arrived at the Parsonage claiming that the subject was, in fact, Johanna Margaretha Sang, an ancestor from early 19th-century Bendorf in Germany. The painting has now been removed from display.
