By the late nineteenth century John Paton, Son & Co. had achieved a key place in the knitting yarns market. From the start, the company had ensured that it remained up to date and had been very enterprising in promoting its yarns (its earliest yarn shade cards date from the 1860s). Its first pattern book was published in 1896 and this painting, undated and by an unknown artist, may date from around that time. The lively domestic scene on the harbour – with the fisherman (wearing a knitted sweater, of course) and his wife outside their house, her knitting on her lap and more wool in the basket beside her, the humour introduced by the yarn having wrapped around his leg – was designed to encourage people to see Paton's yarns as a sound investment.
