John Pepys was one of the earliest members of the Royal Institution (Ri): joining in March 1800, a year after it was founded, and remaining member for the rest of his life. He wasn’t active in the management of the institution but was a generous supporter and in 1854 he wrote to donate a sum of money, stating that he believed he was the longest standing member and possibly the oldest. Whether or not this was true Pepys lived for another 12 years after this and so probably had a good claim to the record. On his death this portrait was donated to the Ri by his son.
