Born in Yorkshire of Scottish parents, John Richmond was educated at Doncaster Grammar School and Edinburgh University where he graduated with an MB ChB in 1948, a date coinciding with the inauguration of the National Health Service. Service in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1949 and 1950 took him to East Africa. He then spent two years as a singled-handed general practitioner in rural Galloway but his ambition was in academic medicine and after passing the membership examination and working in the 'salt mines' of junior hospital posts in England and Edinburgh he was appointed a lecturer in the Department of Medicine at Edinburgh. Following a year at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York he became senior lecturer and reader at Edinburgh, then professor of medicine and dean of the Faculty at Sheffield University.
