John Walton was the son-in-law of Mrs Agnes Critchley, and like her, was closely involved in the development of the local hand-loom weaving industry. Here, suitably ruffed, he poses with his snuff box. The paintings of Mr Walton and his mother-in-law were recovered from the still surviving Alms Houses established in the town by his daughter Agnes Riley.
