Art dealer and benefactor, Lord Duveen of Millbank began his career in his father's antique business, Duveen Brothers, in Hull. He transformed the business, specialising in the acquisition and sale of Old Master pictures, with galleries in London, Paris and New York. A great benefactor to museums in Britain, Duveen donated pictures to the National Gallery and Tate among others and financed building schemes including an extension for the National Portrait Gallery and a gallery for the Parthenon sculptures at the British Museum.
