Louisa Canziani (Starr was her maiden name) showed 36 works at the RA before she was married circa 1885 and, presumably supported by her husband, she continued showing mostly portraits at the Academy. There is a study for this painting in the collections of Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.

Her daughter, Estella, also became an artist and together they extensively travelled in the Alps, mostly in Italy, producing paintings. Estella also wrote three travel books on the region as well.

Samuel Gurney Sheppard was a financier who died in 1903 aged 76. Kathleen Sheppard was about 25 when this was painted, Marianne was about 20. Kathleen died in 1946 and Marianne in 1943.
