Lady Anne Lennard was the granddaughter of Charles II and one of his favourite mistresses, Barbara Villiers (1641–1709), through Barbara’s first child, Lady Anne Palmer 'otherwise Fitzroy' (1661–1722) and Thomas Lennard, Lord Dacre (d.1715). Thomas Murray aimed to emphasise Lady Anne’s youth through her almost fragile and graceful looks. The view opens to a landscape, the young lamb and the flowers possibly echo the aristocracy’s view of the idyllic life of shepherds and shepherdesses. This painting belongs to the Barrett-Lennard family art collection, housed at Essex Record Office. The Barrett-Lennard family was established in Belhus, Aveley, Essex, from the beginning of the sixteenth century until about 1940. Some portraits from this collection can be seen on display in the Searchroom at Essex Record Office, such as those of James VII and II, and Peter Lely's Barbara Villiers.
