The artist studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, and in 1952 he was elected RBA. He was a painter of portraits, still life and landscapes, as well as being an illustrator and teacher. His book, ‘Basic Design: The Dynamics of Visual Form’, first published in 1964, provided an accessible introduction to the elements of the plastic arts, and acknowledged the contribution made by his long association with Harry Thubron and his teaching at Leeds.
