A gaunt-looking bald man, sitting on a wooden seat, in a third class railway carriage looks out of the window to the left of the picture. Two other passengers sit in shadow at the back of the carriage behind him. Passing scenery is visible in a blur through the windows of the train carriage. The colouring of the inside of the carriage is predominantly red. The paintwork is bold and expressive.
