John Chetham McLeod joined The Black Watch as Ensign in 1846. By 1868 he was Lieutenant Colonel commanding the 42nd Regiment, a post he held for 10 years. During the greater part of the Ashanti War he held the temporary rank of Brigadier General. In 1878 he was promoted Major General and went on to command troops in Ceylon, 1882–1887. McLeod was promoted Lieutenant-General in 1888. In 1907 he became Colonel of The Black Watch and died seven years later.
