Born in London, Leigh-Pemberton was educated at Eton and studied in London (1928–1931). During the Second World War he served as a flying instructor in the RAF and was awarded the AFC in 1945. He has done much advertising work for Shell, completed a series of paintings of natural history subjects for the Midland Bank and decorated a number of ships. He has written and illustrated many books on natural history, mostly for children, his detailed style bearing similarities to that of Rowland Hilder. This painting is one of twelve plates in the book 'The Shell Guide to Wildlife'. Others include 'Life on the Wall' and 'Life in the Meadow'.
