Rachel Trickett was born in Wigan, Lancashire. She matriculated in 1942 and graduated in 1945 with a First Class honours degree in English. She was lecturer at the University of Hull from 1946 to 1954 and was then appointed tutor in English at St Hugh's, becoming Fellow the following year. She was elected Principal in 1973 and one of her major challenges was to oversee the transition of St Hugh's to a co-educational College in 1987.
