Central to the picture is a tree with a massive trunk and spreading branches. The tree is completely leafless but the artist has detailed the structure of the branches. In the background a warm orangey coloured sky, with blue nearer ground level. The foreground is less detailed, suggesting muddy ground and puddles with thin tree trunks hinted at. Close examination of the branches to the right of the picture reveals a small outline face, profile, facing left, wearing a hat, elfin-like.
