This is a study of the man’s head from Schumann’s ‘A Music Lesson’, probably by Aline Thellusson. There is also a full copy of the painting.

A man fills his pipe while another sweeps the floor, in a copy of a painting by Teniers who specialised in scenes of peasants and taverns.

Teniers’s work was much copied in the 19th century. This painting would seem to have been copied from an original by Teniers which exists in a number of variants. It is particularly close to the Peasant filling his pipe at Petworth, although some details are different. This painting is first recorded at Brodsworth Hall in an inventory of 1885.
