A maquette for a monument which stands on Lune Street, Preston. On 12th August 1842 groups of strikers enforced the closure of factories in Preston as part of a general strike in Lancashire. On the following day, confronting police and soldiers in Lune Street, stones were thrown, and the Riot Act was read. The soldiers fired about 120 shots into the crowd and four men were killed and three seriously injured. The jury at the subsequent inquiry returned a verdict of 'lawful killing'.
