This is an example of Sickert's late work, one of his so-called 'echoes': artworks 'echoing' nineteenth-century prints and illustrations. It was exhibited in Margate in September 1934, when it was lent to an exhibition at E. J. Lovely & Son by Major Lessore, owner of the Beaux Arts Gallery. According to a review in 'The Isle of Thanet Gazette', 15th September 1934, it derived from a woodcut by Francisco Sargent (1837–1899).

Sickert also exhibited two other paintings there, 'Sweet Prince' (a portrait of Sir Johnstone Forbes Robertson in the part of Hamlet) and 'Richmond Hill'. 'The Isle of Thanet Gazette', 22nd September 1934, records that 'Mr Sickert has been visiting Margate more or less regularly since 1880.'
