In the foreground is a brook, with, beyond it, a tree-edged lane. On the right, crossing the brook, is a horse-drawn cart, containing three ladies. To the right of the cart is a man on a horse, with baskets on either side of the saddle. In the centre of the picture are two women crossing the brook on stepping stones. The one in front, dressed in a dark cloak and bonnet, carries a basket; the woman behind contains a small cage on her head containing poultry. In the foreground, a black dog turns round to watch the cart. On the extreme left is a picket fence crossing the brook; in the distance on the right is a cottage, and hills.
