Herbert Wright enjoyed working with architectural shapes and painted many West Midland urban landscapes. The painting Midland Memories is not of a specific place in the Midlands; rather it is an amalgamation of all the aspects Wright considered representative of the Black Country.

The intense red flames and black smoke of the factories and furnaces contrast with the comparatively serene canal, which formed the transport network for the industry of the region.
