John Howard was a prison philanthropist. A version in bronze is in the Tate collection. This is considered a sketch for the centenary memorial statue at Bedford, unveiled in 1894. One of six pieces of sculpture, models made in connection with the Duke of Clarence Tomb at Windsor.
