Thomas Gotch trained at Heatherley’s School of Art, London; the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Antwerp; the Slade School and later in Paris where in 1882, he moved to the outskirts of the city and spent much time painting out of doors. In 1887 he settled in the artists’ colony of Newlyn in Cornwall with his artist wife Caroline and became part of the ‘Newlyn School’. This work was painted on a family trip to La Faouet, Brittany. Essentially a study of evening sunlight, it depicts a Breton peasant girl holding a piece of dead gorse. Later in his career, his work moved away from the rustic realism associated with the plein air artists to what has been referred to as ‘imaginative symbolism’ harking back to the Pre-Raphaelites.
