Napoleon, wearing the green coat of the chasseurs à cheval which he often wore on campaign, is shown here with his staff officers. It is difficult to identify the foremost officers, but it is known from a surviving account book of Meisonnier’s, that they include Marshals Berthier, Duroc, Caulaincourt, Ney and Drouot. In the background, above and behind the elbow of the officer immediately to the left of Napoleon, is the red and white headdress of Roustam Raza, Napoleon’s faithful Mameluke servant. This detail is said to have been added by Meissonier at the request of the 4th Marquess of Hertford.
