Mary Magdalene mistook the risen Christ for a gardener as she wept near his empty tomb. When Jesus called her name, she recognised him, and he told her: 'Touch me not (in Latin: Noli me tangere), for I am not yet ascended to my father'. Girolamo da Santacroce was probably employed for some years in the workshops of Giovanni Bellini. He was a prolific painter who produced copies of paintings by his great contemporaries as well as his own work.
