An idyllic image of the Old Bakery in the Forty Hill area of Enfield. This is a small settlement that focuses on the Forty Hill Green, however even this idyllic setting didn't escape the problems of suburban growth. In the middle of the nineteenth century the area was plagued with erysipelas, typhus and scarlet fever and the ditches overflowed with filth. These problems became the focus of the Enfield Local Board of Health when it was established in 1850, and eventually action was taken to improve sanitation, even in the more rural areas.
