The view is taken from King’s Staith in York looking upstream towards Lendal Tower, seen through old Ouse Bridge, with its picturesque buildings on either side. It is thought that this is the oil painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784; Farington was told that he “might leave this picture as his monument”.
