Painted to capture the feel of the 1984/1985 miner’s strike in South Wales, this is an image that has come to be associated very clearly with the Valleys. The model for the painting was the actor Simon Cadell.

David Carpanini was born in Glamorgan in 1946. He studied at Gloucestershire College Of Art, the Royal College Of Art and the University Of Reading. In 1969 he won the British Institutions Awards Committee Annual Scholarship for engraving and has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy.
