This full-length oil painting of James II in Garter robes is a modern copy from the one by Sir Peter Lely in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. It is signed and dated as a Lely copy and was commissioned to make a pair with that of Charles II by Lely (BHC2609) in the Octagon Room at the Royal Observatory, as shown in the engraving of that by Francis Place. Both pictures have generally been on display there since, positioned as shown by Place. Mavis Johns was a painter noted as doing portraits in 'Old Master' style and as having been trained in Florence under Pietro Annigoni. How much original portraiture she did is not yet known but the Black Watch Castle and Museum at Perth has another copy by her, of James Tissot's 'Portsmouth Harbour' (c.1877).
