The setting for this painting was an administrative studio of the Arts Council overlooking Porthmeor beach. A study was made in 1980 and was intended as the basis for an oil painting, although it was not until 1994 that the artist realised it would form a good background for a still life.

Born in Blackpool, Johnson studied at Salford and Manchester Schools of Art before painting full time in 1960 at a Manchester studio. He lived and worked in St Ives, and later Teignmouth, although he has now returned to St Ives.
