Bonito was known for his portraits of the Neapolitan royal family and nobility. This portrait is probably of a gentleman architect as he is dressed in an expensive embroidered silk waistcoat and shows a design for a tomb monument, probably his own. The monument is inscribed ‘DELLA CUNA ALLA TOMBA/UN BREVE PASSO’ meaning ‘from the cradle to the grave – a short step’.
